Rick Schuessler and I visited the Pilgrim Creek area for a morning shoot.
The zoo has some new arrivals. I went to view the new cheetah
cubs. They went on display yesterday for the first time.

the Zoo.

I have not been to our Zoo since April 26, 2016 due to my
hip problems so it was nice to be able to visit once
again.
There were a number of new exhibits I had not seen
before. The Grizzly exhibit was nice but it is a
challenge to take photos through the glass viewing areas
but glass seems to be the new norm for exhibits now.

I continued testing the new lens
today at the St. Louis Zoo.
Two things I wanted to test today:
1. Lens used with my Gimbal head, and
2. Lens used with remote shutter release while on the
tripod.
Results were inconclusive. The photos still don't jump
out at me as being GOOD photos. I don't know if this is
the lens or the photographer. I know when I have not
shot for awhile my photos are not as good as when I have
been shooting quite a bit.

I went to the St. Louis Zoo today
with the Jim Scharff family. I had given daughter Emma
an old dSLR as she is taking a photography class in
school and she seems to love it. It was a nice day so we
all decided to take in a day at the Zoo.

Went on a Zoo outing today. My good friend,
Lee Phillion, wanted to get together to
discuss photography. She has an old Canon
30D and wants to get a bit more into
photography.
We talked photography in the Living World
building and then went out into the Zoo for
a quick photo tour.

This is a photo from that day of a Puma (taken outside through a wire fence).
I am enjoying taking photos inside this winter in the Primate House.
The primates are housed behind glass windows but for the
most part the photos come out pretty well.
A few suggestions when shooting
through glass:
1. you will have reflections so try
to position yourself to minimize their inclusion in your
composition.
2. I read an article that suggests
using a polarizer to cope with this problem. I have not
tried this as yet mainly as that would reduce the light
for what already is a fairly low light situation.

I decided to make a Zoo outing today since the weather was a bit
nicer than it has been for awhile.
My main objective was to try out the video
feature of my Canon 1D-x but I also wound up
taking some photos as well. I shot just
enough video to learn that to get better at
it I would have to devote a great deal of
time to that task. Not sure I want to devote
time to that but it is nice to know that in
a pinch I am able to get something.

take a number of photos so that I could test
out my new Lightroom Workflow and work out
some kinks. I got some decent photos using

I visited the Forest Park Zoo
today with my Canon 1-Dx camera and my 500 mm
f/4 lens to see how that combination would work
together. I absolutely love what that lens can do.
It captures colors perfectly and it has great bokeh.
LOVE that bokeh.

f/2.8 lens with the 1.4x TC. This is a great lens
combination as a walk-around. I use it for most of
my people photos.

take photos of the chimps when
an Amish family arrived at my location. This
young lady was an interesting subject so I
had to get a quick snap of her
(paparazzi-style). Believe me. It is
hard to be sneaky with a 500 mm lens!
