The project was completed in two phases, with the west half of the project (between Ballas Road and I-170) closed for construction from January to December 2008, and the east half of the project (between I-170 and Kingshighway Boulevard) closed for construction from December 2008 to December 2009. The project was delivered using the design-build method, which combined design and construction into one contract, allowing for faster and more efficient completion. The project cost $524 million and was completed by MoDOT's contractor, Gateway Constructors.
The Highway 64 Construction Project in St Louis was a significant achievement for MoDOT and the region, as it provided a vital interstate-to-interstate connection between I-64 and I-170, and prepared the roadway system for future development opportunities in the city, such as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency relocation. The project was celebrated by more than 20,000 people who attended the "Fun on the Freeway" event on December 6, 2009, before the highway was reopened to traffic on December 7, 2009.
