If you are looking for a scenic and historic
destination in Missouri, you might want to visit
Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site.
This site preserves one of the four remaining
covered bridges in Missouri, which once numbered
about 30. The bridge was built in 1872 by John
H. Morse using the Howe-truss design, named for
William Howe. The bridge has a picture-perfect
appearance of an old red barn and spans 74.5
feet over Sandy Creek. The site also offers a
picnic area and interpretive signs that tell the
history and significance of the bridge. Sandy
Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site is
located in Jefferson County, about 30 miles
south of St. Louis. It is open daily from
sunrise to sunset and admission is free. Whether
you are interested in architecture, history, or
nature, Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State
Historic Site is a worthwhile place to visit. |
