- About Kolob Canyon -

If you are looking for a scenic and adventurous destination in Utah, you might want to consider visiting Kolob Canyons, a lesser-known section of Zion National Park. Kolob Canyons offers stunning views of red rock formations, hiking trails for all levels, and a chance to experience the wilderness of Zion without the crowds.

Kolob Canyons is located at Exit 40 on Interstate 15, about 40 miles north of Zion Canyon and 17 miles south of Cedar City. You will need to stop at the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center to pay the park entrance fee and get information on the area. The visitor center also has a small bookstore, some interpretive exhibits, and a ranger desk where you can get permits for backcountry camping and canyoneering.

From the visitor center, you can drive along the five-mile scenic road that winds through the canyons and offers access to several viewpoints and trailheads. You can also park your car at the end of the road and take a free shuttle bus that runs every 15 minutes during peak season. The shuttle bus stops at all the main attractions along the road and allows you to enjoy the scenery without worrying about parking.

Some of the highlights of Kolob Canyons include:

- Timber Creek Overlook Trail: This is a short and easy hike that takes you to a viewpoint overlooking the Kolob Terrace and Pine Valley Mountains. It is a great place to watch the sunset or enjoy a picnic.
- Taylor Creek Trail: This is a moderate hike that follows a creek through two narrow canyons and ends at the Double Arch Alcove, a large sandstone formation with two arches. Along the way, you can see some historic cabins built by early settlers.
- Kolob Arch Trail: This is a strenuous hike that leads you to one of the largest freestanding arches in the world, with a span of 287 feet. The trail passes through diverse landscapes, including meadows, forests, and cliffs. You will need to hike at least 14 miles round-trip to see the arch, or you can camp overnight at one of the designated sites along the trail.
- La Verkin Creek Trail: This is another challenging hike that follows a creek through a deep canyon and offers access to several side canyons and arches. You can hike up to 22 miles round-trip on this trail, or you can camp overnight at one of the designated sites along the trail. One of the most popular destinations on this trail is Kolob Canyon Falls, a waterfall that plunges into a pool surrounded by red rock walls.

Kolob Canyons is a place where you can immerse yourself in nature and enjoy some of the best scenery that Zion National Park has to offer. Whether you are looking for a relaxing drive, a day hike, or a multi-day adventure, you will find something to suit your interests and abilities in this spectacular area.
