| Badlands National Park has a long and

years. The park was once a shallow sea that
deposited layers of sediment over time. These
layers were later uplifted and eroded by wind
and water, creating the distinctive landforms
that we see today. The park also preserves the
fossils of many extinct creatures that lived
here during the Oligocene epoch, such as
three-toed horses, saber-toothed cats and
rhinos. The park was also home to the Oglala
Sioux tribe, who considered it a sacred place
and fought to protect it from the US government.
